Ethereum Gambling Sites

Ethereum is the second largest cryptocurrency available to gamblers and is proving to be a force within the cryptographic community. The currency of Ethereum – Ether – operates in a similar way to Bitcoin, however the protocol is entirely separate. A list of available gambling sites that accept Ethereum deposits and withdrawals can be found below, and for more information on ether and how it can be used for gambling, scroll further below.

How to Gamble With Ether

Ethereum allows individuals to transact ether in much the same way that a bitcoin gambler would. The currency operates on a blockchain with miners who are incentivized through block rewards, and blocks are mined through ‘proof of work’. This all sounds remarkably like bitcoin, and that is because it is, however Ethereum allows gamblers to not only transact value, but to run computational ‘smart contracts’ on the blockchain itself.

For this reason, many gamblers have adopted Ethereum, and a number of gambling sites now allow their users to bet with ether. This list of gambling sites has been growing, and for this reason we have aggregated all of the available ether casinos, dice sites, sportsbooks and poker rooms and listed them here.

Buying Ether for Gambling

While ether is extremely popular, it is actually not as easy to get hold of as bitcoin. However, gamblers who are familiar with purchasing bitcoin will be able to exchange bitcoin for ether on a number of exchanges. We recommend shapeshift.io for fast and secure BTC/ETH transactions. Those not familiar with purchasing bitcoin, please read our bitcoin guide.

Ethereum Wallets

Before you start selling bitcoin for ether and visiting gambling sites, you’re going to need a wallet in order to receive your new ETH. The number of Ethereum wallets are growing, however the tried and tested ‘Mist’ wallet developed by the Ethereum foundation is a safe place to start. The Mist wallet can be downloaded from the Ethereum.org website.

As mentioned further above, ether wallets operate in a very similar way to bitcoin wallets, however there is an additional ability to interact with smart contracts. Smart contracts are an extremely new and exciting technology, but for many Ethereum users, this technology is not relevant if their plans are only to gamble with ether.

Advantages of Ethereum for gambling

Gambling with ether is not necessarily ‘better’ than gambling with bitcoin – the properties of the two currencies remains the same, and both share the benefits of being fast, anonymous and transparent. The downside is that the list of gambling sites for ether is much more limited than the huge number of bitcoin casinos, poker rooms and sportsbooks. That being said, ether has grown enormously in popularity, and we anticipate that many more existing crypto-casinos will turn towards this new currency in the near future.

Ethereum Smart Contract Gambling

Ethereum’s smart contracts have an enormous range of applications and gambling is one of the most popular. Smart contracts are the perfect match for online gambling because of their “trustless” and decentralized nature. The idea sounds complex, but in reality a smart contract can be nothing more than a few lines of code.

Smart Contract Example
To understand how smart contracts work, we can look at an example for a simple coin toss. In this example, a player would first place a bet by sending an Ethereum transaction to the smart contract. This is essentially the same as sending Ether to another individual’s wallet.

When the funds arrive at the smart contract address, the contract’s code is executed. This code determines what happens to the funds – should the player be awarded a payout, or does the wager go to the casino? To determine this binary outcome, a random number generator (RNG) is used to create a provably fair result. In this case the RNG would – for instance – generate a number between 1 and 100, whereby any number between 1 and 50 corresponded to heads, and 51 to 100 corresponded to tails.

The Ethereum player of course, does not see any of this code in action. They would be presented with a user interface which showed a coin being tossed (to provide some realism), however it would be the code and not the graphics which determined the outcome. The advantages of betting using Ethereum in this way are 3 fold:

  1. The player does not need to trust the casino
  2. The casino does not need to pay for operational costs
  3. The contract cannot be interfered with

Because the contract runs on the Ethereum blockchain. The decision as to who wins the coin flip is decentralized. This means that no matter what, the bet and the result cannot be interfered with. As a result, the costs of operating an Ethereum smart contract casino are massively reduced, and the player can also bet with absolute confidence that the game is not rigged, and that payouts will be made honestly.

At this current stage, the majority of Ethereum casinos use Ether as the deposit and withdrawal currency and not for its smart contracts. However, we are seeing more and more casinos appear which take advantage of this smart contract technology – and are applying these principles to more complex games than simple coin flips.

Speed of Ethereum gambling issues
Currently, the single biggest downside to smart contract gambling on the Ethereum blockchain is the speed at which bets can be placed. For security purposes, a casino would need to wait for several confirmations of a transaction before the outcome can be decided. This means that a player may need to wait a few minutes for each bet – a necessary trade off for such a high level of additional security. However, the good news is that technology is being developed to use “state channels”. Similar to Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, state channels allow an infinite number of transactions to occur “offchain” with settlement occurring “onchain”. This means that players will soon be able to open Ethereum channels with their casino of choice, enabling fast offchain transactions with similar levels of security mentioned above.
